25th July ’17: Colour, kitsch & energy

Happy Tuesday, folks.

Do you have a favourite colourful film? I will never forget seeing Baz Luhrmann’s kaleidoscopic Romeo & Juliet for the first time. It was in New York in 1996 and I felt moved to tears, not just by the inevitable tragedy of it all but the beauty of it, too. The fish tank scene, where the starcross’d lovers clap eyes on each other for the first time, is possibly THE most romantic scene ever. It still makes me hold my breath. The neon colours of that moment and throughout the movie are breathtaking – the grand costume party, the wind-ravaged Venice Beach (the rubbish-strewn scene was the result of a real-life hurricane that hit LA during filming), the final wretched moments in the candle-filled cathedral. And when I first saw them it reminded me that my life just HAS to be filled with colour, kitsch and energy (and hopefully not too much tragedy). See you all later.
