25th October '17: Same but different

Hi Colour Filers. I was looking through my snaps yesterday and pondering as to why I love pictures of ‘sameness’ so much. Whilst I generally prefer asymmetry to symmetry (especially in my shelfies) there’s nothing that gives me greater pleasure than a perfect shelf of Penguin books standing to attention or old wooden hangers or cotton reels slung into a box at a boot sale. Apparently humans are hard wired to like sameness – it makes us feel safe by guarding against the unexpected. In The Colour File, I enjoy taking photos and putting them in ‘same but different’ quartets, enjoying the sameness and the differentness all at the same time. Sometimes it’s in the shape, the movement or the colour, sometimes all three, but sometimes I can’t even explain my picture choices, I just ‘feel’ them. A bit like seeing clouds and saying ‘I see a dog! It reminds me of that advert when….’ A bit nebulous and indefinable. I’m sure you’ve had plenty of those moments yourself. Anyway, have a great day. I’m off to the Amara Interior awards tonight so I’m trying to kid myself I’m not nervous….catch you later.
